Children's Privacy Notice (COPPA)

Last updated: April 2, 2026

About This Notice

This Children’s Privacy Notice supplements our Privacy Policy and specifically addresses our practices regarding children under 13, in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

What Information Do We Collect From Children?

LitPath collects the minimum information necessary to provide a personalized reading experience:

  • Nickname — a name chosen by the parent (not the child’s real name)
  • Birth year — used to ensure age-appropriate content (not the full date of birth)
  • Language preference — English, French, or both
  • Reading activity — books read, progress, assessment scores, streaks, and achievements

We do not collect from children:

  • Real names or email addresses
  • Photos, videos, or audio recordings
  • Precise geolocation
  • Contact information of any kind
  • Persistent identifiers for behavioral advertising

Parental Consent

Before any child information is collected:

  1. A parent or guardian must create an account and verify their identity
  2. The parent must provide verifiable consent to create a child reading profile
  3. Consent is explicit — we never use pre-checked boxes or implied consent

How Is Children’s Information Used?

Children’s information is used solely to:

  • Deliver personalized, level-appropriate reading content
  • Track reading progress and adjust difficulty
  • Award achievements, badges, and maintain reading streaks
  • Provide parents with reading analytics and progress reports

Children’s information is never used for:

  • Advertising or marketing
  • Behavioral profiling
  • Sale to third parties
  • Any purpose unrelated to the educational reading experience

Who Has Access to Children’s Information?

  • Parents/guardians can view all of their child’s data through the parent dashboard
  • LitPath staff may access data for technical support purposes under strict access controls
  • No third parties receive children’s personal information for marketing or advertising

Data Security

  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest
  • Access is restricted to authorized personnel only
  • We conduct regular security assessments
